    Curriculum Updates:

    Math:

Students will be starting the year reviewing place value and its importance. Students will earn money and be able to buy items at the class store. The class store will be run by the students. They will place orders for products, keep the store stocked, and give change back to students who buy items. As students run the store, they will learn to: budget, that money represents different amounts, how to save money, or buy items with the money they earn.

Cooking and playing sports in class is also a fun way to apply what they are learning.

    Science:

During science this year, students will be solving a number of phenomena (questions). To start the year, students will explore why Ergstown keeps having blackouts. Students will take on the role of systems engineer for Ergstown, a fictional town that experiences frequent blackouts, and explore the reasons why an electrical system can fail. Students apply what they learn to choosing new energy sources and energy converters for the town, and then they prepare arguments for why their design choices will make the town’s electrical system more reliable.
