Career Pathways to Public Safety Program

  • Program Description
    Students enrolled in Career Pathways Public Safety (CPPS) Program will have the opportunity to explore careers in law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical services (EMS), and emergency communications (911/telecommunications). CPPS offers a sequence of courses with coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills required to prepare for career opportunities in select areas of public safety., and occupation-specific skills.

    CPPS will reinforce basic Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science skills appropriate for the selected public safety career. CPPS focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstrating the following elements of the public safety industry; history, health, and safety, community service, the underlying principle of public safety industry technology, labor issues, and general management and operational perspectives.

    High School Credits CPPS is a three (3) year program starting with Career Exploration in the 10th grade, followed by coursework and technical skills in the 11th and 12th grades in the selected career path. Students attend classes 90 minutes per day. Students who successfully complete the Program earn 2.0 high school elective credits for each year in the program.  Students who successfully complete Physical Education (PE) in conjunction with the CPPS Program will earn a ½ credit of PE each year.

    Eligibility
    Current 9th-grade students interested in applying for the program must:

    • Be on track for students entering 10th grade in the upcoming school year. 
    • Pass all core courses and hold an overall unweighted 2.5 GPA.
    • 85% attendance for the entire 9th
    • Submit a parental consent form. 
    • Career Interest Statement
    • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from these options.

      • Counselor
      • Community Member 
    • Participate in a program interview
    • Obtain a counselor sign-off to verify they are on track towards meeting graduation requirements. 
    • Available for a morning schedule of 7:30 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.

    The Career Pathways to Public Safety Program partners with the City of Rochester and the Rochester City School District.  Students graduating from this program do not guarantee employment with the City of Rochester or Industry Business Partners.  Employment depends upon the job market, students meeting and/or exceeding eligibility requirements set forth in the CPPS program, and meeting and/or exceeding entrance requirements for the City of Rochester Programs and Industry Business Partners.
